Facebook - or why doesn't anyone friend ME?

So this has been on my mind for awhile. I feel, that from school-age onward, I was never very popular. Oh, I was popular enough, and had my own friends, but I was never in the popular group. You know, the girls (and guys) with the good looks, that dressed the best, that everyone wanted to be friends with. When teams were chosen, they were chosen first, and I was in the last group to be picked.

I wasn't very outgoing but I also wasn't the quietest person in school. I remember Charlotte, she was very cute but oh so quiet and shy. So I wasn't as shy as Charlotte. Laura and Judy were popular - they went on to become cheerleaders in Jr. and Sr. High School. In my own way, I had a good time at school - I read a lot, was fairly smart, participated in band and marching band.

But I always felt a little inferior at never being the one to be chosen first, or in the first group, because, you know, it's a popularity thing.

That's why Facebook, while it's great at re-connecting people with old friends, and bringing you some new friends, both real and virtual, is also kind of painful. If you're the outgoing type, and are putting yourself out there, I bet you get a lot of friend requests. But if you're kind of quiet and just middle of the road, you probably, like me, are sending out friend requests more often than you are getting friend requests.

Don't get me wrong - I've enjoyed receiving all the friend requests I've gotten, and also the ones I've submitted. I'm tickled with each and every one on my list (or, the ones that I've decided I don't need to have on my list, I have de-friended).

But just once, I think it would be nice if, instead of me sending you a friend request, I looked in Facebook and saw that you had chosen me.

  1. Hi Deb, I use to also be very shy but quite honestly cannot remember the majority of the people I had gone to school with, just the ones I felt a kinship with, a small genuine group of other shy girls. As an adult I am more socially active and eccentrically bold although deep inside I am still that shy girl.

Feel free to friend me if you like. http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000748165961 or find me under Me-Myself Missy
